Why does a Buy take so long?
For US customers, Coinbase uses the traditional ACH bank transfer system to collect money from your bank. The ACH bank transfer system is not built for speed - this is why the bitcoin takes 3-5 business days to reach your wallet after initiating the purchase. Once Coinbase receives the bank transfer and the payment shows as completed in the History page, the bitcoin is transferred to your account. The funds generally clear some time before the end of the day. End of the day would be considered 11:59 PM PST as we are based in San Francisco.
If you add a credit card, or use funds held in a Coinbase USD Wallet, your purchases will be instant, so you'll wait seconds instead of days to receive your bitcoin.
Since your local currency is stored within your Coinbase account, all buys and sells occur instantly. For more information on the timing of deposits and withdrawals, please see: How long do international deposits and withdrawals take?
For Canadian Customers, bitcoin purchases made using EFT take 3-4 business days to complete, while purchases made using Interac are available instantly. For more information, please see: Payment Methods for Canadian Customers
For Singapore Customers, deposits via our payment provider only take a couple of minutes to complete. For more information, please see: Payment Methods for Singapore Customers.
