Payment Methods for European Customers

You can use your European bank account from any supported country to transfer euros to and from your Coinbase account using SEPA or a debit card.

Coinbase only accepts transfers from bank accounts via SEPA. Coinbase does NOT support SWIFT payments. Please confirm that your bank supports SEPA transfers before sending us any funds. European residents can also buy digital currency with 3D Secure enabled debit card.

Deposit with Bank Account

To avoid any processing delays with SEPA transfers, please link your bank account in Settings > Linked Accounts before initiating a transfer. The steps to initiate a SEPA deposit are as follows:
  1. Select Accounts on the left side of the page
  2. Select EUR Wallet
  3. Select the Deposit button at the top-right
  4. Use the information displayed to initiate a SEPA transfer in euros from your bank account.  It is important to include the Reference Number to ensure that your deposit is correctly associated with your Coinbase account. UK customers will need to make an International SEPA transfer, otherwise the IBAN number will be invalid as incorrect in length.
  5. Please only send deposits denominated in EUR.
In order for your payment to be processed, you MUST:
  1. Send a SEPA transfer. SWIFT payments are NOT supported by Coinbase at this time and may incur fees. We recommend asking your bank if they support SEPA transfers.
  2. Ensure the name on your bank account matches the name on your Coinbase account. Corporate or institutional bank accounts are not supported unless you have completed our institutional onboarding process.
  3. Include the reference code EXACTLY as it appears: no spaces or additional text.
  4. Send more than €6 for verification deposits.
Your funds will appear in your account 1-3 business days after you send them.

Please note:
  • For your deposit to complete you need to verify an ID and phone number in your Coinbase account.
  • If you send a SWIFT payment, it will be returned to your bank account in five business days, in most cases. We charge a €10 fee for all reversed SWIFT payments. We are not able to waive this fee. If your payment is for less than €10, your funds will be lost.
  • In limited circumstances, SWIFT payments may be automatically accepted and processed by our system. If this happens, a €5 (or at the current exchange rate) processing fee will be deducted from the payment before being credited to your account. To ensure that your payment is not subject to any fees, please send your payment using a SEPA transfer.
After the deposit has cleared (usually about two business days), you are free to use your euros to make a purchase from the Buys page on Coinbase.

If you have submitted a deposit and it has not been credited to your Coinbase account after three business days, please contact us.

Buying with a Debit Card

Note: Coinbase no longer supports linking new credit cards and some card issuers are blocking digital currency purchases with existing credit cards. We encourage affected customers to switch to a debit card or linked bank account instead.

If you have a credit card linked already, your bank may charge additional fees for Coinbase credit card purchases. To avoid these fees, switch to debit card or bank account.

You can make a purchase with a debit card if your card supports ‘3D Secure’. With this payment method, you will not have to pre-fund your account to place an order. You can purchase instantly without waiting for a bank transfer to complete.

To determine if your card supports 3D Secure, you can contact your credit/debit card provider directly or simply try adding it to your Coinbase account. You will get an error message if your card does not support 3D Secure. Some banks will require various security steps to authorize a purchase using 3D Secure. Some of the methods you may see will be a text message, a bank provided security card, or security questions.

The following steps will get you started:

  1. When logged into your account, go to the payment methods page.
  2. Click ‘Add a Credit/Debit Card’ at the top of the page.
  3. Enter your card information (The address must match the billing address for the card).
  4. If needed, add a billing address for the card.
  5. You should now see a window that says ‘Card Added’ and a ‘Buy Digital Currency’ button.
  6. You can now buy digital currency using the ‘Buy/Sell’ page anytime.

The following steps will walk you through the 3DS purchase process:

  1. Go to the ‘Buy/Sell Digital Currency’ page
  2. Enter the desired amount
  3. Select the card on the payment methods drop down menu
  4. Confirm the order is correct and click ‘Complete Buy’
  5. You will be directed to your bank’s website (Process different depending on bank)
